Total Oman E&P Development B.V. has awarded McDermott International, Inc. a contract to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the Sohar LNG Bunkering Project in Oman, McDermott reported Monday.

The project, which also involves Oman Oil Co. S.O.A.C., aims to establish Oman as a regional LNG bunkering hub to supply LNG as a fuel to marine vessels, McDermott added.

“This award is a reflection of McDermott’s 60-year history of delivering innovative LNG solutions worldwide, beginning with our tank storage solutions in the 1950s, to our liquefaction capabilities today,” Linh Austin, McDermott’s senior vice president for Middle East and North Africa, said in a written statement.

According to McDermott, the scope of work during the FEED phase includes fully defining the onshore mid-scale LNG facilities and preparing a competitive tender for the engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning phase. The company noted that International Maritime Organization legislation to cut sulfur emissions is leading to the start of a “rapid growth period” for the worldwide LNG bunkering market.

On May 13, 2018, Total reported that would use its share of gas from onshore Oman discoveries it is developing with Shell to establish the Middle Eastern country as a regional LNG hub. The liquefaction plant, which will be built at Sohar port, will use small-scale modular technology and boast an initial capacity of approximately 1 million tons per year, the company stated.

McDermott stated that work on the Sohar LNG project will start immediately. The company noted the FEED contract value ranges from US$ 1 million to US$ 50 million。
